SEO Experiment: Switching Keyword to Dubai from Thrissur – Here’s What Actually Happened (Part 1).

I thought Switching Keyword to Dubai would instantly change my ranking… I was wrong.

Where I Was Before
Before this experiment, my website was already performing well on Google.
I was ranking for multiple keywords, like:
- freelance digital marketing specialist in Thrissur
- digital marketing expert in Thrissur
- freelance digital marketer in Thrissur
- best digital marketer in Thrissur
Some of these keywords were even ranking on Page 1.
So everything was working.


Why I Shifted to Dubai
Then I made a decision that completely changed my direction.
I wanted to position myself as:
Best freelance digital marketer in Dubai
Not just for branding – but for:
- Bigger opportunities
- Better clients
- A more competitive market
So I made a bold move:
I changed my primary keyword from “Thrissur” to “Dubai.”
What I Did
I didn’t just update one section.
I fully re-optimized my website.
Here’s exactly what I did:
- Replaced my main keyword across pages ( main keyword: Best freelance digital marketer in Dubai )
- Updated homepage content to focus on Dubai
- Changed headings (H1, H2, title, meta description)
- Updated internal content and positioning
- Shifted messaging from local (Thrissur) to Dubai
At that moment, I believed:
“Now Google will understand my new focus”
What Actually Happened
But here’s what really happened:
My rankings didn’t change the way I expected.
What I noticed:
- My website was still ranking for Thrissur keywords
- I wasn’t ranking for Dubai keywords yet
- Google didn’t immediately recognize my new positioning
This was confusing at first.
Because technically I had done everything right.
The Insight – What This Taught Me About SEO
This is where everything changed for me.
Google Doesn’t Trust Your Words – It Trusts Your History
Even after updating my website, Google still saw me as:
A Thrissur-based digital marketer
Why?
Because of:
- My previous rankings
- Existing backlinks
- Old content signals
- Historical SEO data
SEO Is Not Just Keywords – It’s Authority
This was the biggest realization:
Changing a keyword does NOT instantly change your ranking.
SEO is built on:
- Trust
- Consistency
- Authority over time
Not just editing content.
Simple Way to Understand This
Think of Google like this:

Why should I suddenly believe you’re in Dubai?”
That’s exactly how SEO works.
What I’m Doing Now
Instead of expecting instant results, I changed my approach.
Now I’m focusing on:
Building Dubai Relevance
- Creating Dubai-focused content
- Using location-based keywords naturally
- Positioning myself for a UAE audience
Creating Supporting Content
- Writing blogs targeting Dubai keywords
- Publishing real case studies (like: Switching Keyword to Dubai from Thrissur)
- Aligning content with my new positioning
Strengthening SEO Signals
- Improving internal linking
- Planning Dubai-based backlinks
- Building stronger content authority
This is where the real SEO game starts.
